re bw:
it was [and by some still is] referred to as bill's 13th step.
that his wife lois could remain with him was a choice she made, and it
doesn't mean that she was unaware of what went on for so many years.
helen wyn is but one [though perhaps the most long term/serious] of many
publicly known
more than one biography makes reference to the 'founder's watch
committee' aka 'bill watchers', formed to follow along and try to keep
him out of temptations way - not very successful though
several of the originals like tom powers quit as a consequence of bw's
foibles [using the word loosely]
so, he had feet of clay - as many do. i guess it could be said that is
spite of such, aa and al-anon have helped a great many who felt the need
for a structure such as these organizations provide.
it worked for one member of my family, if not for another

You sound like the person that is described in the Big Book, the
beginning of the "How it Works" section. If you were in fact a
member of AA than this should sound familiar, you sound like the
person that failed. "Rarely have we seen a person fail who has
thoroughly followed our path. Those who do not recover are people who
cannot or will not completely give themselves to this simple program,
usually men and women who are constitutionally incapable of being
honest with themselves. There are such unfortunates. They are not at
fault; they seem to have been born that way. They are naturally
incapable of grasping and developing a manner of living which demands
rigorous honesty. Their chances are less than average. There are
those, too, who suffer from grave emotional and mental
disorders, but many of them do recover if they have the capacity to
be honest."
And you sound just like a Scientologist defending Scientology against
valid criticism. Indeed, Scientology and AA have a great many things in
common.
