Hi all. It looks like I'm going to have to try a new medicine. I
have been on Opana 20mg for about 2 1/2 weeks. It has been decent on
the pain, but I can't function because of side effects. I am quite
spaced out, find myself zoning out, and am extremely sleepy. I've
been sleeping about 12 hours a day and feel like laying down for the
rest of the day. I've been very depressed lately from it all. I am
recovering from a neck surgery and have to go back to work in a couple
of weeks. I'm going to need my focus and energy. It's a catch 22.
The whole point of pain meds is for a better quality and functioning
of life. But even with decent pain relief, my current side effects
negate any better functioning of life. I am going down to the 10 mg.,
but know for sure that it's not going to be enough for the pain...and
then I won't be able to function because of that. Very frustrating.
But I simply can't handle the sedation and spaced out feeling.
I tried the fent. patch which was good on pain and better side effect
wise. But I couldn't keep them on (hairy guy) and it irritated my
skin. Plus it wouldn't last full 3 days and doc not willing to go 2
day dosing. I tried Demerol which was a joke. I was lucky to get 3
hours of relief out of them. I did the best on Dilaudid. I took them
for about a year and a half before they just stopped working. They
were great on pain and no matter how much I took, I never got
sedation, etc. But now I need something long-acting.
To get to the point. I think the next choices will be either
Oxycontin or some long acting form of morphine (Avinza/Kadian). I
don't think he is used to prescribing Methadone. I know everyone is
different, but can anyone comment on Oxycontin vs. Morphine.
Specifically when it comes to sedation and mental fogginess. Thanks
very much.

Dear Matt,
I have had good results from both Oxycocet and Morphine.
I suffer from Cervicogenic Headache...which is like having a
hangover headache every waking moment of your life...not pleasant
by any means...anyways, for over 10 years I have taking both meds for
pain 3 to 4 times daily. I suplement that with nerve blocks at a
docotor's
office once a month. I take a special long acting pill of Morphine
called
MS CONTIN. It is supposed to last 12 hours but I find it works about 8
instead.
Dilaudid is stronger than both Morphine and Oxycocet but I am sure
your physician can work out an equivalent for this med.
Good Luck
