Re: Chiro after surgery??

I know most chiros will not touch your back or neck after getting
surgery. And probably most people wouldn't allow them to either. And
it makes sense to me. But just wondering if anyone out there has, or
has heard of anyone, getting adjustments after surgery...working
around the spot of surgery. Say, the vertebrae above or below a fused
site.

I know most would think it's crazy...but just wondering if it's ever
been done with any success (or "unsuccess").

I'm starting to have surgery regret. I've had neck pain for so many
years. I went to the chiro for 9 years which helped a lot at first.
But then it helped less and less. It did offer me a little
relief...but only some for a short period at a time after each visit.
I tried shots, etc...and surgery(c5-c6) was last option. I was
willing to try anything to reduce pain and had fusion about a month
ago. The pain hasn't gotten any better. In fact, my neck pain is at
it's worse. I know it's too early to tell for sure if it was
successful...but I just have a feeling that it hasn't come close to
fixing whatever the problem was.

On top of things I have bad TMJ problems...lots of pain. It's not so
much from clenching (have mouth guard, no help). It's an alignment
issue. My jaw is totally off alignment. I found whenever I got a
neck adjustment, I'd have significant relief in my jaw pain. Chiro
said that was common and TMJ pain often is linked to bad neck spine
alignment...something about the muscle tension pulling things down.
Well...my jaw pain and sense of proper alignment has now gotten really
bad. I forgot how bad it could get...since periodic chiro visits
would help keep it in check.

So the moral of the story...I'm starting to regret the surgery which I
was hoping would help...since it hasn't...and now I feel like I've
given up getting any relief (even if just for jaw, and not neck) from
the chiro...since i don't think one can get chiro work done after
surgery? Any thoughts/experiences? Thanks -Matt

Sorry, I don't have any direct experience to share, but since you asked
for thoughts I thought I'd chime in. :-)

I would think that a lot of Chiros would be put off because of the
possible liability issues, but that adjustments are probably OK if done
carefully. If a particular Chiro agreed to do it I'd wonder if that's
because he really knows what he's doing or because he really doesn't.
I'd probably decide that based on his overall experience. In other
words, I wouldn't trust a young Chiros judgment on this.
