Perhaps, It is also valid to say that with it millions are living in
poverty as well. Especially those who rely on it as their only source
of income in their retirement years.

They'd be even worse off if it weren't for SS.


Of course there is one class of people who want to scrap the entire
system and replace it with self-directed investment accounts; rich
people who don't want to pay Social Security taxes, and financial
advisors, stock brokers and others who would profit from all that
investing.

There are also those who have lost "faith" in the Federal government
to control it properly, show the will to change benefit amounts &
eligibility at the swipe of a Congressional Pen, and so forth.

Then there are also those aware of what they could be realizing if
self-investing over 15% of their own salary with the probability of be
able to retire even earlier then currently "allowed".

The system has its issues.

To say the least, but for the vast majority who aren't going to save and
for those who would mismanage their investments and be left with little
or nothing, SS is a lot better than nothing.
