Hello Willy!
I'm TALULA, I've been around for a few months, I'm pretty happy
here.Always glad to see a new name, gotta quick question for ya, I keep
hearing about these "breakthrough meds" and was wondering does that
mean a med that is stronger than your main meds, like to take first
thing in the morning or when your pain is ayt it's worst? Cuz I just
double up and thats wrong ,i know, but my pain is at it's worst when i
first wake up because I've slept through a missed dose sometimes. I do
sometimes have a habit of waking up every 4 hours on the dot, to take a
dose of my roxycontin 30 mg. to get back to sleep comfortably, but if i
sleep through it I really feel the pain so much more, needless to say
I'm a bit confused on the whole'' Breakthrough'' thing. But welcome
back and hope all is getting better for you, Sorry to hear about your
break-up, those are never easy, and if you ever want to talk about
anything , I'm here for ya
Im confused. There is no such thing as Roxycontin. A 4 hour dose wouldnt be for a 'contin' drug anyways! Contins require 8-12 hr dosing. Dont you mean "roxycodone"? Contins are long acting drugs, and dont require you to wake up in the middle of the nite cuz you dont need em every 4 hours.
So if yer just taking short acting meds, that you take every 4 hrs, then breakthru meds arent an issue for you. Breakthru meds are for pain that 'breaks thru' yer long acting pain meds. And that doesnt mean when you wake up in the a.m. and need yer first morning dose.
When yer on long acting pain meds like Oxycontin, Duragesic, MSContin, Methadone, and ya wake up in the a.m. in pain cuz ya just need yer first morning dose, thats not a reason for breakthru meds. Now when youve taken that first morning LA pain med dose and an hour or so later yer still in allot of pain, cuz the pain has broken thru the relief ya normally get from the LA meds (LA=long acting), then ya would take BT meds (BT=breakthru), which is a short acting med that one takes in between yer LA med dose. Or if, thru the course of the day, pain breaks thru before yer next dose in due, then youd take BT meds.
But if yer just on short acting meds, BT meds wouldnt be something youd need cuz short acting meds ARE BT meds, and ya cant dose em anymore then 4 hrs as directed! BT meds are for in between the dosing of LA meds only, whether it be in between the 8-12 hr dosing of Oxycontin or MSContin or Methadone, or the 2-3 day dosing of Duragesic.
BT meds are like roxycodone, percocet, actiq, dilaudid, Oxyfast, etc. All short acting meds.
And since theres no such animal as roxycontin, ya really should make sure ya know what meds yer really taking so ya dont give the wrong info to a doc or medical personnel during an emergency! Either yer taking roxycodone, a short acting med, or yer taking oxycontin (or its generic equivalent), a long acting med. (and I dont think that oxycontins or their generic equivalnts, come in 30mg versions--but roxycodone the short acting type does). Giving out the wrong info could result in yer getting incorrrect treatment during an emergency.
Contin does NOT mean "codone"--it is short for CONTINUOUS, as in continuous pain coverage in long acting meds. MSContin has no oxycodone in it. Its just long acting morphine sulfate (MS).

Hello all,
I have been away from the group for many months due to computer problems
and the biggest of all problems, my significant other. After many years of
putting up with her Borderline Personality Disorder it was time to leave for
my own sanity. Its been hard getting up on my feet the last few months. She
was the bread winner. My SS bennies are not much to live on so it have been
interesting to say the least finding a place to live and so on. My pain Dr.
finally has my pain somewhat under control. He Hired a PA who is not afraid
to make increases and changes. The key fro me was changing my breakthrough
meds to Oxi-Fast Liquid instead of dilaudid, oxycodone ir and the other
pills we tried over the years.
How is everyone else getting along? Have the flame wars ended? I will be
reading the posts and catching up so I will post again soon.
I do hope everyone is well and I wish everyone peace and freedom from pain.
