Good for you!

Managing pain is very hard as you well know, and my hat's off to
you keeping up with a three year old!

I think we all benefit from trying to stay as fit as possible. Often
times we must allow for "those days", and support can be so
valuable.

Don't think yourself a failure if you must return to some pain
medication at some point. You're certainly doing everything
else that you can, and many are on it for life.

Excellent point. I recently became fed up with taking pain medication,
something I think we all do at some point or other. I had reason to
believe
that things might have changed. I was wrong. I _did_, under a very
caring
physician's direction taper off conservatively. I had hoped for relief
from
OTC. Knowing that might not be likely, my doctor gave me a fairly
substantial amount of percocet to help weather the coming storm. I
understood I was to use them very judiciously, i.e. as the pain began to
creep up, then take the percocet. Stupidly, I did not follow that, so
sure
of my stoicism and pain threshold.

Long story short, my hoped for release from pain medications was short
lived. I ended up hospitalized with an in patient evaluation for pain
treatment which was then converted to the appropriate long acting med with
a
breakthrough turned over to my physician for administration. I was given
a
very stern lecture by the hospital pain physician that I accept what the
last 30 years has thrown at me and that if I choose to live then pain
medications at this point in time and probably for the rest of my life are
necessary. Wasting energy on _controlling_ pain instead of putting that
energy to more positive use is out and out dumb. Am I happy about this?
No.
I do hope the second half of life will see medical inroads where perhaps I
can indeed leave these pills aside. That hope is cataloged way back in my
mind so that I can, and now do, put my energy to good use and that can
mean
rollling around on the floor with the grandkids or hitting the dance floor
at a wedding.

The best of luck to you.

Best of luck,

Thank you for the responses. I would like to stay away from any
more pills and medication. I've tried neurontin and one other
neurologic medication to try and kill the nerve pain but no luck. That
just made me more tired. I really think if I can lose the weight and
strengthen my body, I will be able to live with the pain. Or at least
control it with over the counter meds. My doc has been great and he
has mentioned those other meds but I refused since I'm on too many as
it is.
I have a 3 year old son and I want to be able to have the energy to
play with him and do the things normal dads do. II'll never know if I
can function without the morphine unless I try. If I can't, at least
I'll know that for sure. I'm only 37. I've lived with back problems
since I was 15. I know I will have them as long as I'm alive. There
has just got to be a way to live with the pain that doesn't involve all
this medicine.
I joined the gym about a month ago. I have lost 12 pounds and I do
feel better. I know that this will be a long, long process. I will
post my progress as I try to do this. Maybe there are other folks
trying to do what I'm doing. If they're out there, maybe they can
share their experiences. Never underestimate the power of support.
