Re: Wanting to take a break from meds

Dear Robin,

Yea, it's pretty natural to get sick of living life on a medication schedule
and need a break. Definitely work with your doc on this. It can make a huge
difference just changing medications for a couple months, just to give your
body a break. That way you aren't also giving up all your pain control. They
call it a "drug vacation". It sounds much nicer than it is.
In the first couple years after my back injury I would give the medications
a total break or at least try, just to see if the pain had changed, maybe I
could tell all the docs to go get... lost. But after a point the pain came
back and was a fresh reminder why I'm taking this poison. "If you ever
doubt, go without." It should be a proverb or something. It sure grabs the
attention.
As far as a taper for the "icky" withdrawal feelings, again talk to your
doc. They can make the process much smoother than that cold turkey
nastiness.

Best of Luck--og

How common is it to want to take a break from all the meds you take every
day, hour, minute of your life? I just want to quit being doped up all
the time just to feel a little relief from this pain. I hate the fact
that if I miss my meds by a few hours I start feeling nervous and jittery.
I don't like being dependant on anything.
I am just wondering if it is normal to feel this way. I have been on pain
medication for about a year now and I really want to just take a little
break from it. Just to feel normal again.
Should I discuss this with my doctor? Has anyone had any experience with
this?
Thanks for any and all opinions,
Robin
