I've seen it in action-People held accountable for using other's
computer services, or even political party names.
My father started getting letters from his ISP, telling him to stop
sharing copyrighted material from his computer. He had no idea where
they got this idea, but we later found out that my nephew, on a visit
here, had downloaded a movie, from Kazaa, or one of those "shareware"
services, and had forgotten to clear out the "my shared files" list.
So, for almost a year, this file was being sent all over the
world-under my father's computer address, using his software. My
father was not an employee-he was paying them-but still, he was the
computer address owner, and therefore responsible for what his computer
was "doing".
So, it's even possible that some advocacy groups could hold Steve's
EMPLOYER liable for what goes out ovr their computer system-something
they wouldn't care for, I'm sure.
The other example does not involve computers, but still illustrates the
point-an avowed racist somehow got the republican nomination for mayor,
and used their resources to spew out his hate-filled drivel. (He was
doing it before, but ,of course, on a smaller scale). The republican
Party moved to expel him. I don't know how it turned out; I think it
was finally settled out of court. But it still illustrates that you
can't use someone's equipment, name, or resources to do things that
they disapprove of.
Maybe we should start using the header "SPSA approvesof"- gay-bashing,
etc. Because silence on the subject implies approval.

Whoa!
it seems to me that it is not my decision to determine who may or
may not work, based on political correctness.
It's not ours either. Only Steve's bosses can fire him and they have to
follow proper procedure in order to do it.
And you talk about this as if it's some silly argument over political
correctness? Have you not been discriminated against time and again by
people with similar bigoted views as Steve Herborn?
Would you hire a Nazi to supervise Jews? Would you hire a self-professed
racist to supervise blacks? Would you hire a misogynist to supervise
women? Would you be willing to accept all of the liability that would
come with those decisions? Steve's views may not be as extreme as the
examples I just cited, but they are quite extreme none the less, and
they are a liability to his employers.
And let's not forget; Steve Herborn has used his office computer to
spread his repugnant views in public forums. Would you let people you
employ do that? If someone was doing that would you want to know about
it?
It's a waste of time to judge one another to the point that
we feel we must "act for the good of the public welfare".
That has happened many times in this newsgroup. Perhaps if you had taken
a stand against it a long time ago your friend wouldn't have been so
supportive of stalkers and he wouldn't be getting his comeuppance for it
now.
