I had to go on medical leave when I had been at a job for almost 25
years. I had seizures (the one and only time, I think) and couldn't
drive for six months. Since the factory was out in the country,
trying to get a steady ride from some one would have been more stress
than I needed. After three months, I decided to go ahead and retire.
Got a big send off with a dinner, etc. After the six months was up,
my boss asked me if I would be interest in coming in part time as a
contractor, name my own hours and days (my replacement had left for
Florida). So, I did, for a while. I went four hours from 10AM to
2PM, but I could still feel the stress building back up, so I hung on
long enough to get my new replacement trained. I miss a lot of the
stuff - I can call to touch base with them, but I find right now, I
want to sever the contacts - I'm afraid my boss will talk me into
coming back.

As to why the seizures, I feel it was all due to stress. The worst
part of it was I didn't know I was having them. The seizures happened
in January. In December, one son was sent to Kuwait and another one
was the victim of an armed robbery where they hijacked his car and
took him out in the country, told him to strip and start running thru
the woods! He came out of it ok with some scratches, fortunately he
didn't step on any metal or glass. It was about 35 degrees out, too.
Then I had a work load and a half. No stress, right!

I'm feeling great, now, but I'm scared of having the seizures again
because I don't know when they happen. I am on the anti-seizure
medication and wear a MedicAlert bracelet, as required by law.

Leaving a job, whether by a layoff, a firing, retirement, or changing
a job is traumatic. You will probably go thru the five stages of
bereavement, so don't feel wrong about it. Just come here and talk to
us - a lot of us have been through this, having to quite because of
medical reasons (I also have RA and OA), so we can thoroughly
empathize. God bless and lots of hugs.
