Dear Lit,
You might be pleasantly surprised. Much of it is an individual thing, but
amount for amount the fentanyl is the stronger medicine, so giving you a
smaller dose of a stronger med just might be the right formula to knock out
most of the pain without making you too dopey-feeling. And don't worry about
the patch crapping out in 8 hours. Keeping it on was a bit of a bitch (and
cleaning the area with the sticky side of a handful of duct tape will pick
up a lot of the dead skin and oils that keeping from sticking well) but
those sucker did work pretty much the advertised time (72 hrs). Some folks
only get 48hrs out of them and advance to that as their dosing schedule, but
be confident you'll get at least 2 days out of it.
While you're making this change over, you may want to tell your doc that you
read the information that came in the box, and it suggests some type of
"rescue dose" or "breakthrough" medication as a back up in case the starting
dose is too weak, or for when you experience a flare up of pain. If you want
to highlight it for him it should be on the big, complicated, sheet that
comes with them under "dosage and administration" , if I remember right.
Also too know that the doped up feeling is a side effect that should start
lightening up on you in a couple of weeks. Almost all side effects are like
that, with the exception of chronic constipation, which if you haven't,
you'll need to keep a close eye on. If you have any questions about that, by
all means, do not delay asking, here or of your MD. Don't be self conscious
about it everyone (or real close to it) here has the same thing and it can
become VERY serious, if you let it go on.
Take care and good luck on the patch--og
