Re: OT - Computer Help Needed

In article <d3hoj1dtniv9l7ksjvf2ljqvifbd0dd7e7@xxxxxxx>, Nat says...

1. I highly recommend that you ditch the direct cable connection to the one PC,
and get a wireless cable/dsl router. They're much easier to work with, and if
there's a problem with the firewall, there's no access in or out. If your
software firewall fails, you're wide open.

2. Make sure that the PC that can't connect is set to get an IP address
automatically. The next time it won't connect, do this:
a. <start> => run => cmd => <enter>
b. At the DOS prompt type "ipconfig /all". Write down the IP address that is
reported. Do the same thing on a PC that works. The IP subnets should be
similar, ie. 10.0.0.5 for one and 10.0.0.3 for the other. eg:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-11-6d-99-13-42
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.3
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
4.2.2.1

3. On the PC that can't get to the internet, can you ping this IP address:
4.2.2.1? If so, try to ping buckeyeweb.com. If you can ping by IP address, but
not by name, you have a DNS issue. Also, make sure that the "server" is listed
as the "Default Gateway". If you have a good IP address, but you can't ping by
name, you can try adding the "server's" IP address in the network connection
settings as one of the DNS servers, and 4.2.2.1 as the other.

As I said, this is MUCH easier with a router.

Good luck.
