CHRONIC LOW-BACK PAIN
Relationship between anger and pain sensitivity mediated in part by
endogenous opioids. Forty-three chronic low back pain patients and 45
pain free controls were given naloxone (an opioid blocker) or saline IV
in randomized order during two test sessions, to examine the role of
endogenous opioids on the perception of acute pain. All subjects were
assessed for their anger management style using two previously
validated psychometric instruments. Subjects participated in two
distinct pain tasks for each test condition. The group that indicated a
tendency to deal with anger through outward expression (physical and
verbal) in the anger expression inventory showed no difference in pain
ratings whether they received placebo or naloxone, thus demonstrating a
dysfunction of their endogenous opioid system. This is the first study
to demonstrate this interesting psychosomatic relationship. (Bruehl S
et al. Pain 2002;99:223-233)
