Thank you, Sy! Actually, the fonts weren't the problem, but in
double-checking those I came across stuff about how to ignore display options
designated by the website and that seems to have been the problem. I doubt I
would have clicked on that tab otherwise though - I've been too spoiled by
Macs where it's easier and/or more intuitive as to where to find things!
This PC was a hand-me-down from my computer geek brother who never used IE so
who knows how things managed to get set strangely to begin with.

There are three controls on the spacing of letters. You can change the
font, the size, and the encoding. My off hand guess is that you are
asking it to display a proportionate font with one that is evenly
spaced. Some fonts, like the ones used to display the text in email
messages, have the same space reserved for each letter and the letters
are designed to fit those spaces--the most common one is called Courier.
Others are designed to have different spaces for each letter and the
letters are designed to look like type in a book. If the program thinks
it has variably spaced letters and you told it to use evenly spaced
letters some of them will overlap. In other words, if the fonts on IE
look like a typewriter and aren't evenly spaced then change the default
font to Times New Roman or some such. I forget where that is so look
around in the menus.
Something of the same may apply to the mail in Opera. I never had any
trouble with Opera so it's hard to say for sure. Internet express
usually wants a default font like Times and the Opera wants the same for
the browser but wants something like a Courier font for the mail.
