Hmmmmmmm........................I don't know if I can agree with this
all or not.
I do know from my own experience and multiple times of being in ICU and
multiple times of being on at vent, that ICU in and of itself can be
quite an overwhelming experience mentally and can really mess with your
head.
But, I also know from my own experience that when on a vent, it is
sooooo traumatic, that keeping me sedated was far better for me then
allowing the sedation to wear off. When ever I have been` on a vent,
when the sedation wears off, I usually always freak out because you feel
like you can't breathe with something down your throat even though you
know logically that the tube is helping you to breathe, it feels like
they are blocking off your breathing and then they keep your hands tied
down so you can't pull out the breathing tube. That totally freaks me
out and I do far far better being kept sedated until I can breath on my
own. I don't know, it seems like they would really have to address
these issues with each individual patient. Some may very well do better
by sitting up and walking even with a breathing tube, while others may
find this even more traumatic then being sedated and not remembering the
experience. I definitely fall in to the latter category! Been there
done that way too many times.
I think once you are moved into a regular room, then by all means, have
the patient work with PT, OT, and even social work or a psychologist or
what ever.
Just my 2¢.
