What a great attitude Navy - give your mom a big hug from me! If she was baking today does that mean her hand is feeling a little better??

My mom always liked a small tree out on her closed in porch, but the past few years or so, it's been too cold to decorate, so last year I got her one of those fiber optics tree. It's very pretty to look at from her living room and all we can see at night are the lights anyhow. My son puts up my big artifical tree and strings the lights and the garlands. Then Mom and I putz putting the decorations on, a couple each day. She has a manger scene that I made back when I was 16 (shhhh - 1954). I made the characters out of plaster of paris and then painted them. The lamb has lost his fuzzy coat and there are a few chips here and there, but she still loves it and puts it out. When I was young, I would paint the windows, too. Ooooh to have that energy again......no, I'm happy now. We watched a movie the other night where this woman gets to go back in time and change a bad decision. Mom and I both decided there wasn't anything we wanted to go back and change.

For me, shopping starts for christmas in june and I try to have it all
done by november so I don't have to deal with the crowds and it also
spreads out the expense of it over several months.
Baking I also try to do several months in advance, as cookies usually
freeze very well and it takes the burden out of doing it all at once.
Pies usually have to be done at the last minute. Any thing that can be
done in advance and then frozen or done in advance and then wrapped with
a food saver machine so that it sucks out all of the air so it will keep
longer (such as chex mix, etc), I do as far in advance as I can! I
also do most of my cooking and baking now by having to either sit down
to mix things, cut things up, etc. So just sit at the table with a
vinyl table cloth that can be easily washed off and do all my mixing and
chopping, etc. I also have a very difficult time draining pans, so
when I cook veggies or other similar things, I put them in an aluminum
strainer and then into the pot so when they are done, just have to lifte
the strainer out of the pot and not worry about draining a huge heavy
pot full of very hot liquids. When the pot cools off, I slide it from
the stove over to the sink and then tip it to pour out the liquid.
Decorating - I don't do near as much as I used to and I also bought one
of those artificial trees that are already prelit so I don't have to
worry about that type of thing any more. Makes it a lot easier to just
hang a few ornaments every time I pass the tree until I am done.
This all helps to simplify my life to some degree!
