Wow - what a weekend! The drive to Maryland was a white knuckle because the
rain was so hard that we could barely see 30-40 yards in front of the car at
times. And I had forgotten how brutal the mountains are to arthritic joints.
Ouch! We stayed at our friends' home and were so excited to see them again!
They haven't changed in years and it was as though no time had passed since
the last time we were over visiting.
Saturday morning we got up oh so early to meet our son, Rob, and his sweetie
and go out to breakfast together. Then it was a road trip to the ice rink
for the day. He coached a game in the morning with 16-18 year olds. One of
the boys got hurt (or activated an injury from the earlier morning's
football game he was in) and they had to call an ambulance, but other than
that all was well. Of course, they only had half the team show up so were
beaten 10-0 but they gave it their all and most of them went with us out to
lunch at a pizza place nearby. Then for us it was back to the rink to await
the arrival of the rest of the family so we could watch grandson play in his
hockey game. He couldn't come with us earlier because he had a soccer game
to play in. (Oh, to have such energy!!) Grandson's team lost by only 1 point
and that really late in the game. All in all, a good day. Then we went back
to Rob's home and chilled for awhile then met with Linda and Himself for
dinner. By 9 PM, the DH and I were so exhausted we could hardly see straight
so left a little before the others and went back to our "hotel" for the
weekend and crashed for the night.
Sunday we met with Linda and Himself and went to the Maryland Renaissance
Festival. Just before we got there, we heard on the radio that it was going
to be a record heat day and if you didn't have to be outside, don't. Too
late - we were out in it. We drank and drank and drank water all day long.
At one point, our daughter made me drink Gatorade. Bleah! But I did feel
better after drinking it. We got to see some new musical acts and watched
our all time favorite regulars there. We love the Renfaire. The scooter
Linda got for me didn't work so I was on foot all day. My ankles were
swollen at the end of the day, of course, but other than that I survived
quite well. I would not want to be the person on duty today at the scooter
store. LOL Linda can be quite fierce when she's angry. LOL When we got back
to the friends' house, I hit the showers and relaxed for the rest of the
day. We had a great dinner there and then went to bed to get ready for the
drive home.
Our drive home was much better than the drive there. We had good weather and
the traffic was not heavy. About halfway home the DH's boss called to see if
he needed Tuesday off due to damages. We said, "Huh?" Apparently while we
were in Maryland, Ike paid a visit to the area and did a number on Ohio.
There were trees down, power out, and even several deaths. We told him what
we had been up to and then called our next door neighbor who was watching
over our house. He said the power had been out for about 24 hours but that
he didn't see any overt damage to the house....at least the outside. We
continued our journey and got here to find no change in the situation. We
emptied the car, then went to a part of town that did have power and ate
dinner. We went to the grocery store and got a big bag of ice, then returned
home. About 20 minutes later the power returned. So all is well and we are
fine....albeit we now have a big bag of ice to use up. LOL
All in all, a wonderful, exhausting, but enjoyable trip. I have had my
family fix now so am good for about 6 months. Glad to be home.
