((((((((((((((((((((jo))))))))))))))))) how totally frustrating for you
to
have a computer that works fine, think you're helping it last by doing
good
maintenance and wind up having the maintenance mess it up so badly. and i
agree with nann. you should NOT have to pay to repair the company's screw
up. they should eat that, because they hired the idiot tech. grrrrrrr .
.
.

butch taught me a rule of thumb with technology (because i used to keep
upgrading my computers myself), his industry-based/managerial slant on it.
because technology is evolving and advancing so fast and prices keep
dropping, it doesn't always pay to upgrade or repair. if upgrades and
repairs appear that they will cost 50% of a newer model, it isn't worth
repair or upgrades (because the upgrades will utimately require upgrades
to
make them work at maximum efficiency down the line--so, you'll keep
dumping
money down the drain on old technology.). makes more economic sense to
save
up and buy new, because the new life expectancy will be greater than the
residual life expectancy of the older model.

still . . . i LOVE my xp and would be hard pressed to give it up. I've
had
this one for 5 years now--his last birthday present to me. (the longest
i've ever had a computer, since the early '80s. usually, two years was
the
longest, before butch would unexpectedly show up with a new one for me. )
i
still can't believe i haven't even worn this one's keyboard lettering off
nor the edges off the keys by now--you have no idea how rare that is.LOL

I was getting far more pleasure than was justified out of the tech who put
this one back in, trying to type on a keyboard with no letters on it.
Pretty obvious he wasn't used to a keyboard with a number pad either.

I'm a fairly decent touch typist, have spent tens of thousand of hours on a
keyboard, and sometimes work in the light of the monitor only. Who needs
letters on their keyboard?

***LOL! he must've been a hunt'n'peck typist. i don't need them either.
until our eldest son complained he couldn't type because there were no
letters on the pads, i hadn't even noticed that i did that.

I want, need, deserve. a new laptop. OK I don't work anymore so I can no
longer bill it out to clients and say it paid for itself, but still. I just
wanted to preserve this one so I can keep the kids off the laptop if and
when I get it. Bought and paid for one laptop already this year but
grandson taking business program in college needed it far worse than I did.

***aha! good idea to let the kids use the older one.

I've decided it might be more shall we say discrete to be sure this thing is
working properly before I fight about the bill. The sound was working and
now isn't. I've got most of the data back where it belongs.
Now need to give it a workout and see how that goes.

***discrete? i'd call that smart!

Oh, and I still can't remember how to make the contacts in outlook available
to all programs including Outlook Express.

***go to your help menu and look up importing/exporting
addressbook/contacts. that should help you remember.
