chief, my nephew is in his 40s and was a truckdriver most of his adult life,
born in california and lived in washington since he was 12. he still has
lymphoma and now, thyroid cancer. he can't get treatment, because he can't
afford it, so he gets whatever treatment they think he can afford to pay for
and that's damn little. the state won't pay for it, because he is on ssdi;
and the doctors know he can't afford to pay for it as he needs it, because
he is on ssdi and he still has to wait over a year for his medicare to kick
in. sorry, chief, medicaid won't help him and he's tried damn hard to
navigate that system. sure, he can go to the ER for treatment, but only
when the cancer gets so bad that it is immediately life-threatening.
in florida, when my folks lived there in the '80s, if you owed medical bills
and couldn't pay them, the doctors and hospitals had a right to take your
house and leave you on the streets. didn't matter if your only income was
social security or if you had no income. dunno if all that's still true
about florida.
what i'm saying is this--don't think that every region of this country is
the same as the region that you live in, when it comes to medical care.
they aren't.
the reality is that there are people in this country who desparately need
help and are not getting it. very few people believe universal health care
will be "free". so, should we stop maintaining roads, because that is not
free? should we stop public education, because that is not free? should we
disband our military because that is not free? should we get rid of police
and fire departments because those are not free?
read the preamble to our constitution--what is "just" about some people
having to die simply because they are poor?! how is it promoting "the
general welfare", to permit illness and diseases to take their toll on
individuals and on families? where are the secured "blessings of liberty
for ourselves and our posterity", when we are the dead and dying, because we
allow ourselves and our posterity to die from treatable diseases?

Well said.

What pyramid scheme/scam has ever been able to pay the tailend?
And Social Security is the ONLY legal pyramid scheme/scam in the
country.....relying on current wage earners -- except some exempt
government employees such as congress (they're exempt from all
laws) and the post office -- to buoy up the system with higher
and higher SS taxes.
Every individual who has attempted to operate a pyramid/ponzi
scheme it has served time in a federal "hotel."
The same has happened with Medicare -- higher and higher monthly
premiums out of our retirees' pocket - out of their monthly SS
check.
Those pushing for "free" health care have their heads up their
asses. Who the hell do they believe is going to pay for it?
Have they looked at other countries where the tax rate is as
high as 80% of income?
Do they want the same here?
