A couple of people have written that a foam mattress topper is helpful.
I have been using something else for a week that might help someone else.

When my left leg stretches out straight in bed, it then really hurts when
I have to bend it. I try to go to sleep on my side with knees bent but it
usually happpened that I ended up on my back with legs out and when they
got bent, the pain was so bad I screamed and woke my husband.

When I sleep in my recliner, that does not happen. There, my feet are
always pointed down some and my legs are never perfectly straight.

SO

I put a 2-3 inch piece of foam on my bed down to my knees, so my knees are
always bent a little with toes pointed down just a bit. Since I did that,
no real sharp pains (still the usual achy ones!!!).

Maybe that will help someone else.

We may need to try that. Charlie has a real problem. He wants to sleep on
his back but it hurts his knees too if they are straight like that.

For a year or two before I had my knees replaced I slept with a pillow
under my knees which raised the knees above my hips and above my feet.
Seems like a lot of bad knee folks do so - you should have heard the
groans in the joint replacement seminar when we were told that we
couldn't use the pillow after the surgery.
