"Contract Station" is what they are called, or used to be called.

Hardware stores, grocery stores, someone mentioned a nursery, etc. etc.

Ours received mail and sold stamps (maybe money orders) and that was all.
This was up to ca. 1954.
The Post Office finally built a full-service branch a couple blocks from the
hardware store and the contract ended.

Our community in the unincorporated county receives mail from the city north
of us. It's confusing because we are in the county, the community has its
own name, yet mail must be addressed to that damn city next door. <g>
