Hi M,,,, My only advice is to tell you a little story about my father
in law.
He went bankrupt twice because he could not turn down people that needed
credit while running two different grocery stores. Sometimes people must
have guidelines and stick to them to stay in business. Your home is your
business I take it. To help people when the room was going to be empty is
Gods Work and commendable. You will have to draw your own lines and live
with the results.

Ok. So I'm home, having a heck of a time getting this kidney
infection gone and being just so exhausted that I can barely climb the
stairs and I hear a knock. hobble downstairs (Ola was at school). On
my doorstep was a young woman, mid 20's who thinks she is moving in
here.
I had an ad on craigslist offering the studio as temporary housing
(b&b season is just beginning to slow down and I thought I'd just
check out the temp market)and had lots of response including several
email from this woman. I, since putting in the listing for temp
(meaning a few weeks at a time) have had enough reservations to keep
going for a while so i pulled the temp listing. So this young woman
is German and is here as a visiting nurse for four months and needs a
place. She is very very young and seems very very lost. Her english
is good but comes haltingly. Her last email was on saturday when I
gave her the address so she could google to see if the studio would be
too far for her. So that was the last I heard from her. I have since
then taken reservations for most of september which takes me into
first week in October with guests and pulled the temp listing. There
was nothng in our emails to indicate we had any agreement about a temp
situation. So she is now in my guest bedroom which is just a little
strange.
however, this house has had some very unusual things going on with it
since we moved in. We have had reservations cancelled to be followed
by a call from the person who most needed to be here. We actually
started calling it "the mists of Ben Lomond" as you really can't even
find us if your not supposed to be here. Between guests, we have
offered sanctuary to many women for a night or two (enough said about
that).
So I am looking at this woman knowing how it feels to be homeless even
though well employed (I just finished that one and it sucked-more than
sucked, it made me self absorbed beyond belief and I have only
recently healed that). She is of an age between Megan and Ola. She
is scared. She is in santa cruz where housing is harder to find than
any place besides manhatten and she can't really figure it out.
So she's here. I can stop taking reservations for the studio and move
her in there next month and she can stay with us in the guest bedroom
until then but that cuts my income quite a lot (125.00 a night vs.
700.00 a month and even if I only fill half a month each month, that
is still a huge difference. But... she is really desperate and just
seemed so relieved that we were not scary people.
I have put out calls to all the people I know with rentals but this is
the month UCSC students return and there is just no housing.
So any advice? well what the heck, I'm sure I will let her stay,
whether inside or in the studio. I need to reframe this into how
lucky I am to have a house big enough to take in another person.
This should be an interesting year. It sure has been an interesting
few months since we got here.
However, if you do have any advice, feel free....
m
