Pasteurized almond rule has raw food fans going nuts

MADERA, California - A new federal rule requires that all almonds be
pasteurized to prevent foodborne illness.

Industry representatives say tightening food safety rules to subject almonds
to flash heat treatment will help expand the market for California farmers,
who grow about 80 percent of the world's almonds.

The regulation is set to take effect September first.

It's also going to anger a lot of raw food enthusiasts who eat vegan food,
none of which has been heated above 118 degrees.
