Re: OT:Autism

Rose,
I so appreciate your views on this. It is a different perspective for
me...The actual people that work with our Special Children.
Also...
Bet you didn't think I would just go on and on a rambling did you...And I
have so much more to learn...

The Real RainMan...Is Kim Peek...
His orginal dx was autism, but he also has a very rare syndrome known as
"Savant Syndrome"
Not everyone with Autism has Savant and many that have Savant are not
Autistic...
http://www.wisconsinmedicalsociety.org/savant/synopsis.cfm
This is the website for that with links about the Real Rain Man....He is
quite the individual...

Thank you so much for all your interest...Knowledge is power and the more we
know and share this, it might make it possible someday for a cure.
Okay...Here comes my Spamming for the day...Please don't kick me out...
We are planning on Walking For Autism here in OKC on March 31, 2007.
Wendy sent me information on that now...
I emailed her and ask if we could create our own team...
Anyone here interested in "Donating" or making a pledge can email me...just
take the no spam outta my address...
I will send you the information....

Thank you again for listening to me...
Cindy

Hi Cindy,

Thanks for this information, which I would never have had but for you.
Now I want to learn more and not be so ignorant about autism. Rainman
was a great movie, made a lot of people aware of autism, but I'm sure it
barely scratched the surface about the sufferers.

Some of you..probably most...do not know that I have 7 grandchildren...5
boys and 2 girls...
My son has 4 boys and 3 of them have been dx with Autism.
The Oldest Ryan...He is High Functioning and has made alot of
progress...I
believe that he will get through school and live a fairly normal life.
He
has delays and somethings are not as easy for him, but he is so smart...

Noah is 5 now..and he is on the lower end...
He is a beautiful child, but challenges us everyday.
When you think of an Autistic Child...Noah is that...

Ashton is 3 now...and has just been dx..He seems to be the Highest
Functioning and had we not known what we did from the other two, his
might
have gotten missed...He would have probably went through the school
system
struggling with social skills and learning disabillitys...
Although he is very bright...He has speech delays..He started school in
Sept
when he was 3. Working with the Speech Therapist has done alot for
him...

It is very important that children are dx early, because they have a
very
good chance of helping them...The specialist in the field say between
the
ages of 18 and 36 mths can really make a difference.

Oklahoma has a program in place called Sooner Start.
They will come to your home and evaluate and test your children. If they
find they are delayed or suspect a dissabillity, they will place them
into
special preschool classes at the age of 3. They will be given a set of
goals
for the year, and a plan with whatever help they need.
For instance...Ashton recieves speech therapy.
Noah and Ryan both have Occupational Therapy as well.

They have also been dx with Sensory Intergration Dysfunction...This
falls in
the Autism spectrum, but does not necessarily mean that a child with it
has
Autism...

My Daughters Son has been DX with this and is in special needs classes
at
school. He is almost 8.
Billy Michael is also a beautiful boy that has a learning disability and
is
so so smart....He ask so many questions and he retains so many
facts....His
favorite show is the Animal Channel...

There has been alot on TV this week about autism.
It was thought that 1 in 166 children were autistic.
Now the numbers are growing. They are saying it is 1 in 150...

My son's children are seeing a Genetics Specialist right now.
It seems that having more than one child in the family with Autism is
very
normal.
Boys usually more than girls...

I am just rambling here...and all over the place, but this so comes from
my
heart...

One more fact that is scary. Every thing that these kids gain...Every
thing
we work so hard for so that they can have a life...Can be lost in one
day...
At any time...they can slip backwards...Maybe just a little...Or they
could
wake up and never speak another word...

Our Noah...He was a normal Baby...with all the normal
Milestones...Saying
Mamma and Daddy...and Bye bye...
The normal steps in Baby's first language...And then one day before his
first Birthday...It was gone...

Here in Oklahoma, we are having a Walk for Autism...
On March 31...
I encourage each of you to read what you can about this and tell
others...Maybe someday they will find out WHY and maybe HOW to help our
children...

Thanks for listening to me ramble..
