Re: Synvisc vs. Hyalgan

Hi, Chief,

Got your answer from the horse's mouth:

The docs in his practice are almost evenly divided on whether
the Synvisc/Hyalgan injections do any good. Half think they're
ineffective and don't do them at all. The other half that does
think they're effective, uses the better (per my doc) Hyalgan
brand.

If your RD thinks you're a good candidate, might as well try
them if your insurance will pick up the tab. You might get
some relief from them. I'm no longer a candidate for them,
since my knee is too far on the way out.

It was a slightly cumbersome proce$$ for me. The set of 3
Synvisc injections, given a set number of weeks apart, cost
$300 (back then) just for the drugs, which I had to get at the
pharmacy and take to his office, at which point I'd get charged
for an office visit and for administration of the injection each time.

Well, that didn't come out quite right -- I'd get the box of three
injections and bring them in for the first one, then his office
would stash the other two for the following appointments.

IIRC, with the Synvisc, the indications stated that three series
of three injections each was as much as they recommended.
The law of diminishing returns rears its ugly head.
I don't know what the current indications are for Hyalgan.

Good luck; let me know what happens!

Yes, please.

Monday, my rheumy stated he was going to request an OK
from insurance to start Hyalgan. I know it and Synvisc
are basically the same, both from rooster combs.

The latest Synvisc material I have is January 2005 while
the latest from Hyalgan is dated April 2006.
