I'm not sure if all states do things the same way, but here in Michigan,
if a podiatrist sees you and you have either diabetes or rheumatoid
arthritis, the podiatrist can prescribe some shoes for you and medicare
and many private insurances will pay for most or all of the cost of a
pair of shoes. I think it is for one pair of shoes per year or two.
Might be worth doing some checking into as well as finding a reputable
podiatrist.
