DeQuervain's and Dupuytren's

Do they go hand in hand? Never mind. Really bad pun. <sigh>

Anyway, I went to see my orthopod as a follow-up to my broken ankle. My
ankle is healing OK, slowly, but OK. My pod insists that I continue to
use the cane, which is kind of a nuisance. But, I do have this loverly
wooden cane, and it's better to fiddle with than smoking cigarettes, I
suppose........ Whatever......... <g>

Anyway, while I was there, he asked me about my wrist, which I had
complained about last time I was there. I told him that it's still an
issue, that it was an issue before I broke my ankle, and that using
crutches really exacerbated the problem. He said, "No surprise". He
diagnosed the problem as DeQuervain's, and wrote a script for PT. "Oh
joy," I said. "More PT." I really hate PT. Have any of you dealt with
PT for DeQuervain's? Was it worth the effort?

For those of you who are lucky enough to not know what DeQuervain's is,
it's a sucky inflammation of the tendon that extends from the base of
the thumb down the wrist, and causes miserably sharp pain whenever I
turn my wrist a certain way, which happens to be most angles.

While making a new appt for four weeks, the receptionist told me that
she had DeQuervain's, but didn't bother with PT. Went straight for the
fix, a tendon release surgery. It's not been an issue since for her. I
hate surgery, but she makes a really good point. Why putz around with
PT, when likely I'll end up with surgery, anyway?

Fact is, I have a really rapidly progressing recurrence of Dupuytren's
Contracture, which is, in and of itself, an unusual manifestation of
Dupuytren's. This time, it's located along my thumb tendon, and the
fascia is drawing my skin down to this miserably pronounced "pit" at the
base of my thumb. Very likely, I'll need another surgery to fix this,
as it is now affecting my ROM, and is causing some joint pain (which is
also unusual), so fixing the DeQuervain's at the same time would be
ideal.
