Let me try a few suggestions. Are you quite sure what you are seeing is
biological. When my parents lived in western North Carolina, they had fine
powdered granite that would settle out of their water. Not so you would
notice in a glass but enough to see on the bottom of a white container such
as a tub. It was harmless, though they did start using a filter on their
drinking water. A Britta or something like that. The non uniform colors
sounds like that.
Here where I live there are government environmental safety office, state
federal county whatever. They will likely have an answer if this is
something common to where you live. And they will have tests run on a
sample of water you supply for just about everything from what sort of plant
food you need you use or what plants you can grow to safety and purity
tests.
Since it isn't Monday yet, its probably a good time to meet your new
neighbors and find out if this is familiar to them.
