There are worse obviously, I rate McDougle 2nd behind Mamula. Maybe the pro
side is they realized replacing 36 was easier said than done.
Sometimes I wonder what might have been with McDougle. The guy walks
around with a black cloud over his head. He suffered freak injuries that
hampered him for most of his rookie season, and just when he seemed he
could be on the verge of a breakout year, he gets shot. To make matters
worse, they need to go in a second time for surgery.
McDougle wasn't a bad pick at the time; as you say he's just plain
cursed. Bernard Williams turned out to be a colossal bust, for
different reasons which may or may not have been foreseeable. Mamula
was absolutely inexcusable. Trading up to get him was ridiculous. But
Mamula was at least serviceable, which is more than can be said for
Jon Harris, another Ray Rhodes special. But the Igs absolute worst
draft bust -- and I'm dating myself here -- was Leroy Keyes, running
back who I believe was selected right after OJ Simpson and even
compared to the Juice. SOB couldn't beat out Tom Woodeshick.
