Changing Set Minds

Per Don McKee at philly.com -
"Change the mind-set. It's been fashionable all week for pundits to
list changes the Eagles need to make to resume the Super Bowl chase.
Usually this has taken the form of personnel changes. Others have
suggested changing the dual role of coach/personnel chief Andy Reid. A
few have even suggested (gasp!) trading quarterback Donovan McNabb.
While none of those suggestions are outrageous, they're all a waste of
time.
What the Eagles need right now is a change of offensive philosophy.
Until the Birds' collective brain trust gets it through their feathers
that a totally predictable passing attack triggered by an injured or
ineffective quarterback with subpar receivers is worthless, then the
team won't improve.
The Eagles need to recognize the value of balance - not just pay lip
service to the running game - but really embrace it.
Whether the change comes from newly promoted general manager Tom
Heckert, newly installed offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, or
Reid himself is irrelevant. The team has to fully embrace a new
offensive philosophy that includes a true between-the-tackles running
back; a fullback who is more than just an offensive guard playing in
the backfield; a multipurpose tight end; and genuine downfield wide
receivers.
If they can coax McNabb into running the ball occasionally, that would
be a welcome bonus."
Sounds about right to me.
Of course, the Iggs also need better personnel at DL and OLB (and to
get healthy), but without changing Andy's philosophy on O - especially
by embracing offensive balance via the running game, including a
credible, consistent abilty to run inside successfully - it won't be
enough for a Lombardi. Particularly in light of the spectacular
crash-and-burn that was the 2005 seaason, next year will be crucial in
determining whether Andy has a champion's ability to adapt and succeed,
or the just a wanna-be's foolish, small-minded consistency.
