Excellent news. Now it's up to Congress.

Congress is controlled by the looney socialists (Democrats) and that
nutjob Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi is the richest woman on the planet!

This bitch has almost single-handidly destroyed the world under her
watch. Good Job!

I think she believed she could get lots of miles bashing bush. Not
having anything else going for her.

Yeah, the war, the economy, the fed having to bail out the two
mortgage companies, this is all Pelosi's fault. Bush was just hanging
around all this. I do agree that congress will never pass this though,
which is a shame. Oh, and to the OP, how much money do oil companies
make by spilling oil in the ocean?

they don't, it's obvious that the oil companies lose money in a spill.
if you expect perfection out of the oil companies let me remind you God
isn't the CEO, they are human and do make mistakes.

But how often do they make this particular mistake?

not very, but when they do the wacko environmentalists make sure we don't
ever hear the end of it.

There's something to be said for whacko environmentalism, actually. But I
don't particularly understand why they would spearhead this particular
cause. If regulated, and perhaps more importantly, if "punishment" was
spelled out in advance (ie. all associated costs belong to you, and not
the taxpayer), then I'd wager that the proper safeguards would be
implemented.

Seems to me that environmentalists would gain more traction with emissions
issues and the like.

Environmentalism itself is fine and, I think, very popular in and of itself.
The problem is how it has become a club to be used to enforce other, less
popular policies that would have trouble garnering support by themselves.
Such as, driving the price of oil up by limiting access, subsidizing the use
of public transportation, limiting public access to parks, and retarding
NIMBY development of pretty much any kind.

The resistance to your extremely reasonable suggestion is because the actual
goal is to prevent any drilling at all, rather than to ensure that there are
few or no spills, and that any spills that do occur cause minimal ecological
damage.
