I think you missed the point.  You can't seriously believe that today's
athletes are a product of *natural* evolution...can you?  If any player
from that era were born today, he would have the same factors at play,
that make today's players bigger, stronger and faster.  I think this
improvement is due to many factors that would be available to ANY other
athlete...not just those that you pick from the past or present.  Jim
Brown for example would still be Jim Brown...just better trained,
nourished, coached.  Same for Butkus or Starr or any other great player
from his day.  Given an equal start, I see no reason to believe they
would be inferior now.

More likely, Butkus would have been replaced by some guy named Joe Smith
who was identified at age 9 as being exceptionally large and athletic; was
groomed throughout his younger years with thousands of dollars worth of
football camps; hit high school where he was coached by a full-time
football coach; would regularly work out in the $25k gym that his parents
got him, and his own personal trainer and nutritionist and "supplements";
was recruited by every college in the nation; was slipped a few bucks and
"favors" throughout his college experience to keep up the good work; gets
drafted and receives the final reward of several million dollars, instead
of having to hold a part-time job on the side unloading trucks.

And an undersized but meaner and nastier Butkus would still kick his ass.

The bottom line:  when you create a multibillion-dollar industry, you
should expect that everyone and their brother will be doing their part to
get in on it.

But weren't the players even more motivated when they were poor and more
desperate?  Haven't we seen some tremendous physical specimens come and go
with no success at all?  I guess you give very little credit to the mental
aspects...the character of the individual.- Hide quoted text -

Catch-22. More motivation to get in, but more motivation and
possibilities to get out as well.
