Do you think that the 07 Dolphins could beat the 85 Dolphins in a
head-
to-head match up?

Yes. Modern players >>> old team players. Modern players are bigger,
faster, stronger, "smarter" (in that they know everything the old
players
know, but more things as well), more athletic, etc.

This is often mentioned...what is not is that if those players played in
the same era, they would be utilizing the same training, coaching and
nutritional methods...if not the same illegal supplements. I really
don't see that as a basis for comparison.

How do we know that, if all that stuff was available to them, that the
rosters would even look the same? You can't just add 50 lbs to a player
and assume he's the same guy. Players in this league try to add a mere
10 lbs and it can completely destroy their game.

Most likely, if the 85 teams came from the same environment that players
start up in today, the entire roster would look consist of different
people.

There's a vast difference. We aren't talking about beefing up a nearly
developed person, but the whole person from improved pre-natal care to
better nutrition to an all around improved environment. For example...I'm
55 years old. I was raised in a household where both of my parents smoked
like chimneys. No one thought twice about that. I'll bet my mom smoked
even during her pregnancy, though I never asked and it's too late to now.
That's just the way things were. We've since learned a lot hopefully. I
think all of that can impact the development...the size of kids growing up
today. That's why each generation improves (hopefully...and usually) on
the last.

Of course there is no way to prove any of this. It's just (mildly)
interesting conjecture...just like which teams were the best.

Yeah, I know, but why would we assume that you could take Refridgerator
Perry and add 50 pounds to him, even if he had a head start on it from
birth? His size would be nothing special today. In fact, he'd be a little
small. It's hard to look to the past and find guys who are 6'5, 310 lbs,
strong, and quick like Richard Seymour. Or look at Vince Wilfork -- huge,
strong, but the guy can motor! Why do you suppose that is? Obviously it's
not evolution. It's something else (I would argue training, grooming,
selection - mostly driven by reward). Not just better diets, better gyms,
and better supplements.
