So, do you think the Giants realize they've been had yet? You just
KNOW they have been talking about going after his ankle, maybe even
installed a game plan designed to flush him from the pocket. The
Giants have to realize they lost the first battle of wits before the
game even started.
Count me as someone who doesn't think the ankle was all a ruse.
I look back at Belichick's comments: "I'm really excited about getting
you guys that injury report next Wednesday..." etc., and the wry smile
on his face, and then the relaxed way in which Brady answered
questions about the injury. They were much more open about discussing
the injury than they have EVER been. Count me as one who doesn't buy
the argument that they suddenly had a change of heart regarding full
disclosure before the Super Bowl. I think Brady might have had a
slight tweak of the ankle, but they decided to play up the rumor once
they thought it was advantageous or amusing. It looks like they were
having fun with it. If it was serious, they wouldn't be laughing
about it.
I do tend to think that Belichick decided to let the whole ankle thing
play out a little more than he normally would. Based on all
appearances, here's what happened --
1. Brady tweaked his ankle. Not terrible, but enough for the medical
staff to take precautions.
2. TMZ.com struck. If it weren't for that video and photo, we'd
never even know about it. Proof how anxious Tom was to get to
Gisele's, he didn't even bother to remove the boot.
3. Brady, Belichick, the entire team knew it was nothing major.
Belichick used it as a "team-building" exercise, another example of
"Us Against the World." You could see it in the players' eyes when
they spoke -- "I know a secret that everybody wants to know but it's
staying in our locker room!" There was definitely some obvious
satisfaction in giving the national media a dose of "Belichick's
Rules" on this.
4. The media went out of control and I agree with one of the earlier
posters that the Giants probably ate it up. It certainly feels like
the Giants are getting waaaaay too wrapped up in the whole pageant
aspect of this week.
5. Now that it's time to get down to brass tacks, everybody's back to
business.
