I see. Then who'd play offense for that Bears team?
Regardless, it was a fine team and one of the best that I recall, but
that same Bears D would get burned big time against the current Pats
offense.

Yeah, their D was primarily scheme oriented.  The vaunted "46", which
at the time totally shut down the conventional offenses of the day.
Takes good players to execute a scheme of course, and they did have
some on that D roster, including at least two HOFers.  But it didn't
take very long for offenses to catch up to it and figure ways to beat
it.  I agree that the Pats passing game could beat it handily.  But
who knows if those same players were coached to a more modern game
plan today, how they'd stack up.  Overall though, they'd still
probably lose anyway, because of the reletively poor Offense, as you
mentioned.

This is incorrect, the Bears defense became much more standard after
Buddy Ryan left after Super Bowl XX. They set the PA record in 1986
running a much more base defense under Vince Tobin. They were still
one of the best defenses in the league until after 1988 when age and
bad drafting caught up to them.

The 1985 Bears did not have a poor offense. They averaged 29 points
per game.
They had one of the best three offensive lines in football, and one of
the best running backs (and most complete player I've seen) in
football history. The Bears had problems on offense only when McMahon
was out, unfortunately for them this became more and more frequent
over the years. But with Mike Tomczak as the starter, this was the
number one reason for the Bears having some offensive troubles
post-1985, and the reason they didn't win more Super Bowls.
