Going for it on 4th down is on sure fire way of practicing for do or
die situations, in real games.
The experience is invaluable.

But that's not the reason they do it. The reason they do it is that
they're not machines who can be throttled up and throttled down at
will. They're people who build a certain mentality, and that
mentality can either be that when playing, they play full out to win,
or alternatively, size up the situation as to what might be good
enough to win, and only play good enough for that. The problem with
the latter, though, is not only do they lose the killer instinct
necessary to avoid playing down the competition, and of being
susceptible to falling for trap games, but they lose the focus
required to finish practices, to evaluate film, to finish
concentrating at meetings, etc....

BB knows that this team is a once in a lifetime collection of talent
and experience the likes of which the NFL will never see again. And
he knows that if he knows it, the players know it, and that it's just
too damned easy to get complacent. That's why, no matter what the
situation, and no matter who the next opponent, and no matter how
badly they beat the last opponent, he'll still analyze every play by
every player, and find what they didn't do, right, and make sure they
do it right the next time.

You can't do all of that, and then tell the guys to let up on the
opponent so that it seems as though the game was competitive. How do
you tell a bunch of guys to play hard against an opponent who's also
playing hard to beat them, but send them plays to run that set them up
to accomplish less than what they are capable of doing?

It can't be done, and BB knows it can't be done, and so he won't do
it, no matter who has a problem with it. This is the NFL, not Tuffy
football. There's no crying in the NFL.
