before Welker signed it (which he never did), they talked through the
trade with Miami. So they had a basic deal in place with Miami...at
least the structure of one, anyway. They then talked with Welker and
said this: Look, you are under contract with Miami for $1.3 million
for 2007. If you sign this offer sheet, you'll be making a lot of
money...more money than you're currently making, whether it's with NE
or Miami. However, if we *don't* offer you this, you obviously cannot
sign it, and you're left making $1.3 million. But Miami is willing to
trade you to us. But we're only going to do that if you agree to sign
for less than the offer sheet. It'll be more - a lot more - than what
you're making now, and you get to have a shot at a Super Bowl and play
catch with Tom Brady instead of Joey Harrington. If you don't agree
to that, maybe the offer sheet goes away."
I don't understand that at all. Why would Welker agree to take less if
the Dolphins trade to the Pats?
Because the Pats say, if you don't agree to a lesser deal than the
offer sheet (which we haven't officially offered yet), then we'll just
forget the whole thing and you'll have to stay in Miami making $1.3
million.
But why can't they say that anyway without having to give up a 7th?
