Brady's damned good at it, although I wouldn't say the best (forced to
choose, I'd probably actually go with Manumaleuna for that distinction).
The problem is that unless Belichick can get Brady to become a receiving
threat, he's too one-dimensional to be useful. I never understood the
concept of the "blocking tight end". Why not just use an offensive
lineman
like Hochstein for that?

for weeks now you keep bringing this up every time we talk Graham, but
honestly, just how much did Graham go out for the pass this year? maybe
it was just because of the porous OL, but it seems to me his singular
task on most downs was to block. so why drop all those bucks if in the
end the computer shows opposing defenses that 75% of the time that
Graham is in there its to block. that's allot of money to pay for a
viable decoy factor and especially one that when called upon to make
that big catch, has only done so sporadically and not exactly scaring
opposing defense.

You don't have to be Tony Gonzalez to be a receiving threat. Graham is a
receiving threat. He can go out and catch a pass and run with it
afterwards. Look at the last two postseasons to see that. Can Brady can do
what Graham could do in the receiving game? No, and that makes him
one-dimensional.

Let me put it this way -- on third downs, Brady will be standing on the
sidelines. Graham, on the other hand, would be split out wide in the slot.
Late in the season, after Graham had come back from his injury, he was often
on the field longer than any of the other receivers, tight ends, or backs.
Using that as a metric, Brady is going to be a part time player. That's the
difference.

That doesn't mean I think they should have gone out and signed him at any
cost. But let's not pretend the offense wasn't downgraded with this move.
