Regardless of money and Branch, the Pats need a good WR.
That simply can't be argued.

It can be argued because they are locked and loaded at TE, and can even
split their stud TE wide. They have many hands from many different

They have two good TEs, (one just coming off surgery), and a rookie.
If Graham stays healthy and Thomas is average, it will be a strong point
of the team.

locations. If Branch does not come back (but he will) then somebody
like Maroney or Thomas or Jackson will just have to face the
opportunity of a life time. Somebody will step up.

All draft picks have the opportunity of a lifrtime. There are plenty
that just can't get it done. If O'callaghan starts he will be the best pick
with Maroney a close secod. I can't tell about the rest. They have had
some flashes, particularly Cobbs...the rest seemed average for rookies.

I wouldn't take this to mean that would be preferable to having your
star WR out there, but it's the same you would do if Branch got hurt
(and he tends to get hurt.) You just find other outlet valves and you
work them into a new game plan.

I wouldn't be so sanguine about this if we were Buffalo or Jets fans,
but I have a degree of faith in the process here. No matter who goes
down the offense will morph into something dangerous. Even with no
running game they were a contender last year, and that hurt more than
the loss of one receiver.

It would be tough on any team to lose its star WR. The end result
will always be based on consessions made for the offense to cover
up the hole until a comparable replacement can be found and
broken in. Branch has speed, hands, runs good routes, is in Brady's
comfort zone and gets double teamed. He's in the comfort zone of
a lot of fans too. When he's not there, I'm just not comfortable and
I don't see anyone on the roster that can effectively take his place yet.

Sure the team can "exist" without a consistent deep threat.

I would rate Caldwell as a deep threat for sure. You cannot just let
him waltz, right? Doesn't mean he'll be there for the catch but the
point of stretching the field is to stretch the field, not make a home
run every time. I am quite sure that Jackson can be used in the same
manner. They both have the speed, and I think we're OK there. I don't
think they used Branch like that anyway. Isn't he more of an
intermediate threat?

I'd rate Caldwell as "threatening to catch the ball" anywhere on the field.
