Regardless of money and Branch, the Pats need a good WR.
That simply can't be argued.

It can be argued because they are locked and loaded at TE, and can even
split their stud TE wide. They have many hands from many different
locations. If Branch does not come back (but he will) then somebody
like Maroney or Thomas or Jackson will just have to face the
opportunity of a life time. Somebody will step up.

I wouldn't take this to mean that would be preferable to having your
star WR out there, but it's the same you would do if Branch got hurt
(and he tends to get hurt.) You just find other outlet valves and you
work them into a new game plan.

I wouldn't be so sanguine about this if we were Buffalo or Jets fans,
but I have a degree of faith in the process here. No matter who goes
down the offense will morph into something dangerous. Even with no
running game they were a contender last year, and that hurt more than
the loss of one receiver.

Sure the team can "exist" without a consistent deep threat.

I would rate Caldwell as a deep threat for sure. You cannot just let
him waltz, right? Doesn't mean he'll be there for the catch but the
point of stretching the field is to stretch the field, not make a home
run every time. I am quite sure that Jackson can be used in the same
manner. They both have the speed, and I think we're OK there. I don't
think they used Branch like that anyway. Isn't he more of an
intermediate threat?

Branch was thrown to long more than any other player on the team, and Brady
threw a fair amount of deep balls. Dwight and Bethel were the "deep
threats", but they just weren't used all that often, relatively speaking.
