Suppose it works and they stop hiring and fire them all?
Suddenly there are 8 > 10 million people out of work and
looking for a new way to make money. We've ended up
creating this new "no" income class. I don't have the answer,
but this doesn't sound right without a good follow up plan.
I never said fire them all. It wouldn't happen like that anyway. A lot of
employers would still take the chance and hire them, but it would
drmatically reduce the incentive to cross over if the jobs for illegas
aren't there.
There are still a lot of unanswered questions such as, how would
a quota of fired illegals be arrived at? It could be done through
penalties. Let's say a penalty of $1000 per employed illegal plus
fines and penalities for unpaid taxes. That may be a figure that
could be absorbed by a large corporation, but would spell the
end for a small business. The law would be showing favoritism
towards big business and get a lot of criticism from the public.
Another method is through enforcement where businesses are
either selectively or randomly chosen for review. This opens the
door for a lot of finger pointing and possibly corruption. I
suppose the whole affair could be done slowly enough so as to
not tax the economy all at once. If it happens too slow though
we may be creating a cycle of firings and hirings that would
minimize risk to employers hiring illegals and not produce results
quickly enough to satiate the public.
The illegal crossings do have to stop now. I don't sense racism as muchYou really can't deport 12M illegals all at once, so deport them
as you catch them.
We as a country made this mess by letting it get this out of
hand. In a sense we have to accept some responsibility for
the good people that crossed over. These people were just
trying to get out of the shithole called Mexico and come over
to the land of opportunity. It's not like we made it difficult for
them to come in. I'm all for deporting the illegal criminal elements,
but this country that always takes the moral high ground with
human rights can't just start rounding up good families and
scare innocent children half to death by kicking their butts back
across the border with an indiscriminate f*** you. We're better
than that.
Agree the we made it. But we are creating our own shithole by allowing
this to continue. There is also a racist double-standard in this issue,
as
well. I don't hear complaints about Canadians and any other more-or-less
English-speaking immigrants. Another example: we encourage people from
'communist' countries to defect...unless they're Cuban. I realize there's
a
difference in the number of people, but the bias exists.
as I do a biased preference. I have nothing against people of Hispanic
decent.
Making the choice of renting my apartment to non-english speaking Mexicans
or French Canadians is an easy decision. My lineage is French Canadian.
I understand more of the language and can better relate to them. Landlords
of Mexican origins would undoubtly accept Mexicans as tenants over
Canadians. This is nothing more than personal preference and not racism.
Drug dealing Mexican gangs have also been portrayed by the media and
parading the Mexican flag in this country's face created further resentment
amongst most non-Mexicans. The worst gang of French-Canadians that I
have seen was preparing to play a game of High-Low Jack on a Friday night.
Looking at these issues and the number of illegals from each country, there
will be an unavoidable bias against Mexicans. We are also nearing
elections.
Who is going to include 'get rid of the illegal Canadians' as part of their
platform?
We don't have the money to deal with this anyway. The national debt is
again
out of control. The cost of setting up and training committees and
enforcement
agencies accross the country is prohibitive. What do we do with the
illegals
once they are caught? ...fine them, imprison them, send them back...
I don't see any of these as viable. Tolerance, acceptance and finally
citizenship
are the only possible answers that I can see. This is a big problem with no
easy answers.
