I am seeing all these pathetic politicians from Mitt to Bush talk about how
they want to lower the price of gas. But they are all fools...
temporarily eliminating the state fuel tax or forcing Detroit to make cars
with better mileage will do absolutely nothing to solve the problem long
term.
Let's imagine that we discovered an oil field in the United States that
was capable of fueling all our cars. It would provide tens of thousands
of jobs for Americans (and heck, probably even a few illegal immigrants).
We would no longer have to import oil from countries that hate us such as
Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and Canada. And best of all, this oil field has a
replenishable (and therefore virtually unlimited) supply.
Guess what...? Such a field exists - only it isn't oil. It is a little
liquid called ethanol (which already composes 10% of your gasoline). 60
Minutes did a piece on ethanol this past Sunday, ABC News did a piece on
Monday and (for my part) I've been talking about to friends and on the
internet for at least a year now.
The oil companies oppose ethanol. Of course, they're making untold
billions so they oppose anything but the status quo.
But here's the very best part... this isn't some hydrogen or alternative
fuel engine that you can't use anywhere east of the Rockies. A "Flex
Fuel" engine can run on gasoline or ethanol or any combination of the two.
That's right, if you have a flex-fuel car then you have one engine and one
gas tank and you can put any combination of regular unleaded and/or
ethanol in it.
Is ethanol perfect...? Heck no. But it's cheaper than gas (currently
costs about $2 a gallon but that would likely come down if it were mass
produced in greater amounts). And it's cleaner than gas. More and more
ethanol stations are slowly being opened across the country - although for
some reason the ultra liberal northeast corridor doesn't have one yet (the
closest one to us is in NJ).
Wouldn't it be nice if we were no longer at the mercy of people who wish
we were dead...?
The only problem is all the politicians are either afraid of the oil
companies, or they are in the pocket of the oil companies...either way, it
wont happen for many years.
