So by putting reigning in quotes you're saying that the Steelers are not the reigning champions?

Just the opposite. The guy I'm exchanging notes with made the following comment in response to what Crennel said.:

The Steelers are champions now."


Wishful thinking. He can't possibly think the Steelers are "reigning"?
The Pats abdicated the throne, the Steelers didn't seize it.
