Well if they have unused cap space one year they could put his entire
bonus into it (like this year), then if he's injured 2 or 3 years
hence, they have no dead money to write off. So it lessens that risk.
That's not lessening the risk. That's STILL just redistributing to the
first year. They're still paying out the same exact amount of money to the
player.
They have much more money then they can spend, unless they put a huge
portion of some signing/extension bonuses in it. They could get in a
bidding war for Moulds (say cap hit of 6M this year), put 7M of
Seymour's bonus in it (or 1/2 to 1/3) and extend Branch and put a good
chunk of his bonus in there and sign the rookies.
They could do all of that. They could throw all kinds of money at Moulds.
But if that's what it comes down to, then they should have re-signed Givens
in the first place. They could extend Seymour and pay 1/2 his bonus up
front while starting Monty Beisel. But instead of that they could have paid
1/3 his bonus up front and kept Willie McGinest. Now they also have to go
out and spend more money on a punt returner than what they would have if
they just re-signed Dwight. The bottom line is this: they're not going to
get the same caliber of talent they lost for cheaper. They're either going
to downgrade the position, or they're going to pay more than they would have
if they re-signed those guys.
I don't know any other high price FA out there other than Moulds (after
he's cut).
There's Arrington, but his number is supposedly insanely high. Woodson
should also be pretty pricey, but I don't consider CB that much of a need.
