NFL, players near CBA extension

The NFL and its players appear close to extending the collective bargaining
agreement through 2007 and ending the labor strife that threatened to
hamstring player movement this offseason.
The owners planned a conference call today to discuss negotiations. Word
out of Indianapolis is that the league withheld the official salary cap
number, scheduled to be released yesterday, on the presumption it will be
moot when a CBA extension is reached.
Speaking on Fox Sports New England last night, Patriots vice chairman
Jonathan Kraft said he hopes a deal is completed tomorrow.
?The commissioner told the coaches and the GMs in Indy over the weekend
to expect to hear by Wednesday at 4, either we have a deal in principle or
we don?t,? Kraft said. ?I think everyone on both sides feels like there?s
too much to lose. If I were betting, I?d bet there would be a deal by
Wednesday.?
If the owners and players can strike a deal, the cap would expand
significantly. Right now it is expected to fall in the $92 million to $95
million range, but with an extended CBA, it could reach as high as $110
million.
Also, the 2007 season would now be played under a salary cap, which
means contracts could be negotiated beyond this season without fear of an
uncapped year when different rules would apply.
The Patriots appear in very fine shape. Their current cap number is
roughly $90 million. If the cap expands beyond $100 million, they?d be in
much better position to work out a long-term extension with All-Pro
defensive end Richard Seymour and a new deal for Adam Vinatieri, the
franchise?s all-time leading scorer, who is set to become a free agent
Friday.
