Re: Brady on the state of the team's mind

There is a malaise of desire on this team. They give up too easily.
My theory is that they give up for a reason. I think some of the
players on defense are feeling like, "We're not being put into position
to win." So this, I am theorizing, is why they really give up. It's a
"there's nothing I can do because it's not a question of effort"
feeling to it.

Give the amount of confusion out there on defense I think the theory
has some merit. In fact, Chad Brown's well known problems make me
suspicious that it's not the players' faults.

Folks, we may be seeing some bad coaching. Too early to say, too
little data, this is nothing but pure speculation, but I think some
signs are building.

However this doesn't answer the question why the offense just seems to
sleepwalk sometimes (often). They looked like sleepwalkers against San
Diego. They just had no life, no pop, no nuthin'. Brady keeps
including himself in this category and that is interesting since he
also recently said on 60 minutes, "So is this all there is? There must
be something more than Super Bowls."

Too much success - is there such a thing? If you get too much success
too early does this destroy something in you, at least for a while,
until you've rested certain parts and gotten totally recharged?

Elway's retirement may never have happened when it did if he had not
won two in a row but had a strong shot at his first in 1999. I do
believe that after a man has accomplished his goals that he needs to
reset them. You can't reset them much after you've won three SBs.
What can you do then that is so special? Maybe beat up on a CFL team
and call yourself the North American Champion?

Sure, nobody wants to lose. Agreed. Everybody wants to win. Agreed.
But the question is how hungry are you to get the win. The question is
what kind of fire is there after the quenching waters of three SBs?

Also, perhaps the long seasons and the cumulative stress of all the
injuries has something to do with this. They are under seige, and
every team is geared up for them, and I really think that staying on
top is much harder than getting there. Mentally, it's harder to stay
motivated at the top.
