Bonuses can amortized only up to the length of the contract.  But this
year they can be amortized only up to 5 years, or the length of the
contract - whichever is shorter.


My logic behind that is the extended Watson hold would seem almost
silly over $134K against the cap.  Why would the Pats fight so hard
over thatone  issue last year?  It doesn't make sense & as much as I
hate BB & Pioli they are certainly not stupid.


You are correct that they are not stupid.
I suspect that the cap difference was only one of the reasons for the
hard fight.  I suspect that negotiating style of Watson's agent was
another reason.

Once Watson changed agents, things got resolved quickly.

But that doesn't explain it because the reason if got resolved quickly is because Watson caved. I suspect that the Pats did want 6 year deals, but that they see the hand writing on the wall. They know they're in a tough spot with Seymour right now, and that agents and the league will be putting more pressure on them to end this policy. I think they're taking advantage of this 5 year cap thing to subtly change policy instead of caving publicly.

While I'm at it. Was Mankins deal out of line with last year? IOW, did he agree to less in exchange for a five year deal?
