Reading?!? Uh, yes, I'm pretty sure even folks _not_ USA-born can
read---sometimes their native language _and_ English---and at the very
least the basic English in which such care instructions are typically
written.
Last year I spent a couple weeks on vacation in Italy. I met many
many people there that could not speak or read English.
Really? Our experience was chagrin at how many Europeans were able to
communicate with us in at least rudimentary English whereas we were tied
hopelessly to translation guides when attempting their language (French,
Greek).
I only know a couple people that have housekeepers or nannies (both
from south or central america). One nanny is fluent in English, the
other can't speak it so I assume can't read it.
Yes, I suppose that would be the more common situation to be found
among those employed in lines of work considered menial by American
standards. Those more fluent in speaking/reading English are likely able
to secure more lucrative employment.
And just for the sake of discussion, was it reported that the employee
was 'foreign'-born or are we making some assumptions here based on her
name? Just asking.
The LA Times article says she is 48 from Peru.
Wow! How especially humiliating it must've been, _if true_, to be dealt
with so disrespectfully by someone young enough to be her daughter.

Whether you saw them or not they were there. They're not billboards,
you know---just small fabric swaths stitched unobtrusively into a seam.
This really is news to you?!?
I've never bought a $700 shirt before. Don't know what comes with
them. I assume at that price any tags on them must be embroidered in
gold. Talk about money to waste.
Ain't that the truth. Imo, clothing in obscene price ranges shouldn't
need attached instructions cuz the price should include its own personal
valet fully versed in its care.
_Any_ garment sold, including at the highest-end clothiers, is legally
_required_ to bear maintenance instructions.
Interesting. The shirt I am currently wearing is a special custom
made one with my companies logo - it was either order these special
shirts or wear a tie to work. I don't see a care tag any where on
it. Its possible it was sold that way and fell off. The law
evidently doesn't specify that these tags have to be durable...
They're usually stitched in pretty securely in either the neckline seam
or in either of the side seams down toward the hem. Perhaps, though, a
company-issued shirt meets the exemptions available--- "Manufacturers
and importers of products covered by §423.5 are exempt from the
requirement for a permanent care label if the product can be cleaned
safely under the harshest procedures [...] if there is reliable proof
that all of the following washing and drycleaning procedures can safely
be used on it: Machine washing in hot water; Machine drying at a high
setting; Ironing at a hot setting; Bleaching with all commercially
available bleaches." (And make no mistake, an expensive garment such as
Bryant's blouse would never qualify for such an exemption!)
Bloody riveting stuff, huh? You should know that I am delaying the
completion of a very critical project I am extremely enthusiastic about
and would be working on at this very moment if not for the need to
selflessly research and impart these terribly vital, humanity-saving FTC
regs on "Care Labeling of Textile Wearing Apparel."
So there.
