I totally agree with your point..just because everyone at ESPN and
practically every sports talk host and of course Vegas believed the
Lakers were supposed to be the better team,
Vegas did not think anything about which team was better - they just
take your bets and take their cut no matter who wins. More peopl
bet on LA which affected the spread/odds a bit.
Absolutely..with the betting line favoring the Lakers my point was to
show that people who were willing to actually put money on the line,
(which I have always thought was incredibly stupid in regards to the
NBA) were also favoring the Lakers.
the object of a line is to split betting action...the gamblers job is to
find the line that appeals to him...the number may reflect how people may
bet 'with their heart isntead of their head' but with international lines
now only local bookies have to worry about that now.(in Chicago everyone
bets the Bears with their heart and the bookie has to fly to Vegas to lay
off some of that Bears cash...my buddy's bookie use to have me buy nunbers
for him when he couldn't get here in time...my freind would call, wire some
money and tell me who to lay it off on...his bookie would give him some
incentive to do that...a better line or maybe forgive a debt...
To determine who the public favors you have to watch which way the line
moves...know as the 'steam'...in some of the games that steam went to the
Lakers...the public thought the line was wrong...I know here I guessed on a
line b4 it was put up and thought the stean would go on the Lakers...I got
the number right at 3.5 but the steam went to the c's...and the number
changed...Vegas bookmakers surely were rooting for the Lakers.
that's poker were they always get a cut...it's called the rake...
Vegas and every other bookie would like to get two way action but that's
not always the case...when the betting is one sided and the number keep s
going up or down you can be sure Vegas cares who wins or looses...I've
heard many a bookie offer incentive to take a number he needs but you might
not like...some thing like...I'll forget that nickel you owe me from the
colts game if you take the Lakers for 20 large cuz he may have 30,000 more
in c's bets than he needs for two way action...that's laying off a bet aka
getting rid of the one way action and laying it off on someone else...
The vig*...like a dime line... bet 110 to win 100 is their cushion and it's
not alway enough... get in late from a local bookie and there may be a
twenty cent line...another way to recoop some aticipated loses.
