Last Kobe had crazy stats. But he came in third. Now you want to say
he can't win the MVP because you have to have crazy stats?? Which is
it? A stat contest or best player on the best team contest.....
Like I keep saying - until they define MVP there will always be controversy.
And even then, I'm betting the writers will do what they want anyway.- Hide quoted text -

I'm glad for Kobe because even the writers in their little deadline
worlds and dramas finally couldn't help but see fit to give Kobe the
MVP.
Meanwhile, he's been the consensus Best Player in the League -
according to the PLAYERS themselves - for about five years now. I
would think THAT matters more, but the MVP is a historical
legitimation that you were once a great player. With Lebron and Chris
Paul and a few others, Kobe may not win another. But I for one will
not care as much anymore. He deserved this award.
And he's thrilled me over the years with his artistry. Hell, I feel
vindicated he won!
If he averages 33/8/8 next year and the Lakers win 60, it would be
very surprising if he didn't win again, but I doubt he'll put up those
kinds of numbers. I'm guessing Lebron will win it at least three times
before he's done. Paul will probably deserve at least one sometime
too.
I checked out of curiosity, and Nate ("Tiny") ("The Skate") Archibald
never won it. But in 1972-73 he led the league in scoring with 34.0
and assists, with 11.4. Dave Cowens of BOS won the MVP, and the Knicks
beat the Lakers in the Finals. Nate played for the Kansas City-Omaha
Kings, who finished 36-46. Great playground-style player, about 6'1"
IIRC. I think Chick Hearn said the thought Tiny was more like 5'9"...
My friends and I loved his game (we were 13 yrs old) because he was so
wildly productive and flashy and only a few inches taller than us. We
could relate. Even in white suburbia. He was a sort of proto-Iverson
but with the assists, too.
