It is a shame he has to take the fall for a group of veteran players who
should know how to turn the intensity up. He gave them every shot to win
it and they went out and played like pussies.

A shame, perhaps, but it's part of every coach's job description.
Doesn't have to be fair, it's implied and agreed to in the contract they all
sign.

I'm no Avery fan but do feel for him. OTOH, any coach who'd work for
Mark Cuban has no self-respect so should expect none from others.
